Department of Public Health organized a Field Visit to the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR)

The Department of Public Health of Daffodil International University organized a ‘Field Visit’ for the 18th batch students of Master of Public Health (MPH) program at the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), Mohakhali, Dhaka. The ‘Field Visit’ was organized on Wednesday, 18 July 2018, as a part of obligatory academic activities under MPH program.  The objective of the ‘Field Visit’ was to deliver information among the MPH students about functional modalities of the IEDCR and various nuances of disease surveillance and outbreak investigation. Twenty seven (27) MPH students of 18th batch of Weekend Program (WP) attended this ‘Field Visit’. The field visit program consisted of two parts namely orientation on activities of IEDCR and visit to the laboratory of the institute. The program was coordinated by Dr. Salamat Khandker, Associate Professor, Department of Public Health of Daffodil International University (DIU).

Dr. Ahmad Raihan Sharif, Medical Officer of IEDCR welcomed the visiting team and delivered a lecture on historical background and present situation of the institute. Since 1961, the institute was functioning as WHO Malaria Eradication Training Centre (METC). The present Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) was established in 1976 through a bill approved in the Parliament.

Dr. Raihan Sharif informed that IEDCR is the focal point of National Influenza Center (NIC), Global Health Security (GHS), One Heath Secretariat, International Health Regulation (IHR), Food Borne Emergency Response and Global Disease Detection Centre for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), USA.  The objective of the IEDCR is to conduct Epidemiologic Surveillance, Research, Training and Outbreak Investigation and Response.  Dr. Raihan mentioned that IEDCR contributed in outbreak investigation & response of Dengue Fever, Chikungunya Fever, Nipah Virus infection and other common communicable diseases in Bangladesh. IEDCR is maintaining cell phone based surveillance record too. After the orientation lecture the student visited the laboratory facilities of the IEDCR.
